All Round Sportsman Makes Supreme Sacrifice

News is just to hand of the death, while in action on May 12, in France, of Signaller Noel Reginald Jones, of the 15th Infantry Brigade, and formerly of Flemington road, North Melbourne.

A native of New Zealand, Signaller Jones resided in Melbourne since boyhood. He was an all round sportsman of extraordinary merit. He played football for the Essendon Association for two seasons. As a cricketer Signaller Jones claimed several big innings in the North Melbourne district.

He competed in the Warrnambool road cycle race on nine occasions, and finished fifth in one of them. In every race he completed the full distance, 165 miles.

In the natatorial world he won several events, and on the occasion of Odiva's visit to Melbourne, he took part in a competition, which consisted of repeating “Odiva's “ performances in a glass tank, on the stage of the Tivoli Theatre. With a fair sized field in the contest Noel Jones easily secured first prize. He played baseball with North Melbourne for some seasons, and was regarded as one of the best players in the Association. He was an enthusiastic ice skater, and won prizes at the Glaciarium carnivals.

Signaller Jones was in the middle thirties, and his loss is deeply regretted by a large circle of friends in almost every department of sporting activity.
